In fact, virtually the entire American automotive industry was booming in 1955 which surely contributed to Cadillac's success.
However, Cadillac had positioned itself atop its primary competitors such as Lincoln/Continental, who would debut their flagship Mark II the following year, and Packard, who debuted their first V8 engine in '55 and would essentially be out of business the following year.
Cadillac had built a sterling reputation as the purveyor of the most elegant and finest automobiles with many believing that the owner of a Cadillac had achieved perhaps the highest status in society.
