Vehicle Description This 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Convertible Coupe is a gorgeous, pre-war Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) True Classic that has been nicely preserved and is ready to cruise! 1940 was a year of transition for Lincoln.
Not only did the Lincoln Motor Company officially become the Lincoln Motor Car Division of Ford Motor Company in 1940, Lincoln would also start pushing American automotive design into the future.
Of course, 1940 was really just a signpost since the wheels began turning several years earlier due to Edsel Ford's forward-thinking leadership.
Back in mid-30s, Lincoln expanded its product offerings with the release of the Lincoln-Zephyr as a bridge from a basic Ford V8 model and the ultra-luxurious Lincoln Model K, similar to what Packard did with its 120 and what Cadillac did with its companion brand LaSalle.
The Zephyr, which borrowed its name from the Greek god of the west wind Zephyrus, was smaller and sportier than the K-Series Lincolns and also sported more modern, aerodynamic body lines.
By 1940, the boxy Model K looked antiquated and was phased-out, essentially replaced by the Lincoln-Zephyr Continental.
The Continental's unique design originated from Edsel Ford's preference for sleek European style and was based off of Edsel Ford's 1939 Continental prototype.
Gone were the outdated-looking running boards and the bodies were equipped with more glass, that together added to the futuristic look of the Continental.
Additionally, the Continental was both longer and lower than its predecessor, furthering the notion that the Continental's gorgeous design was an indication of where future American automobile design was headed.
By far, the most expensive Lincoln-Zephyr in 1940 was the Continental Cabriolet, a 2-door convertible with the famous bustleback-style trunk.
With an extremely expensive suggested price (for 1940) of $2,840, only 350 Continental Convertibles were produced by Lincoln, which make the Continental Cabriolets a highly desirable and collectible model and body-style.
This particular Lincoln-Zephyr Continental comes to us from a prominent southern-based collector who cared for the car for the past 15 years.
Under the hood on this 1940 Zephyr is a 292 Cubic Inch L-Head V12 engine paired with a single 2 barrel carburetor that was said to have created 120 horsepower when new.
The 292 Lincoln V-12 is mated to a 3 speed manual transmission that is shifted using a three-on-the-tree shifter.
Riding on a set of wide whitewall bias-ply tires on steel painted rims with Lincoln V-12 hubcaps and beauty rings, this 1940 Lincoln Zephyr has a truly classy look going down the road.
The chrome and brightwork, including the optional bumper guards, around the exterior of this Lincoln is in very nice shape as well.
The tan cloth power convertible top is in fantastic shape and it goes up and down with the simple flick of a switch.
Dual outside chrome mirrors are a welcome touch as well since they make manuvering this Lincoln convertible in and out of tight spaces much easier.
The steel body on this '40 Zephyr Cabriolet has been refinished in a Burgundy Red that completes the elegant exterior look of the car.
The interior on this 1940 Lincoln Continental is absolutely gorgeous! The front and rear bench seats have been reupholstered in Red Leather accented by Cord cloth inserts.
The matching door panels, red carpeting, dash and steering wheel are all in fantastic condition and all appear to be in their stock configuration.
The dash is equipped with a 110 MPH speedometer, oil pressure gauge, battery gauge, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with a clock and AM radio.
Whether you're buying your first pre-war classic car or you're adding to your existing collection, this 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Continental Cabriolet Convertible would make an excellent choice.
