By the end of 1931, the Ford Motor Company was at a crossroads.
Although the Model A was an incredible success for Ford in the late 20s and early 30s, Chevrolet had taken over first place for the best selling automobile company in America and upstart Plymouth, then sitting in third place, was starting to chip away at Ford sitting in second place.
Not only did the Chevrolets and Plymouths have updated style, they also had more modern 6 cylinder engines.
Simultaneously, car sales were slowing down in 1931 as the country was in the midst of the Great Depression.
In other words, Good Ole' Henry Ford needed to pull a proverbial rabbit out of his hat once again and that's exactly what he did when he introduced his new 1932 Ford to the public.
In 1932, Ford actually debuted two new models, the Model 18 and the Model B.
Both cars looked virtually identical both inside and out, but where they differed was with what came under the hoods.
The Model 18 came with Ford's brand new 221 Flathead V8 and the Model B came with a slightly updated version of the Model A's 200.
5 Inline 4 Cylinder engine.
Ford's reasoning behind the Model B was simple.
First, Ford wanted to avoid potential production problems that hampered the changeover from the Model T to the Model A.
Second, Ford was concerned that the public might be apprehensive about buying the new V8.
Therefore, the Model B utilized only the new 1932 body design while retaining the ever-reliable 4 cylinder.
However, the engines were not the only changes to the '32 Ford models, they also featured new and more elegant styling both inside and out.
The look of the dash was updated with new instrumentation and a new anti-theft key lock mechanism.
Likewise, and perhaps more famously, the exteriors were updated with new radiator shells that were slightly V'ed and had vertical bars.
Additionally, the '32 Fords sat a bit lower and were a bit longer than their Model A predecessors.
Under the hood on this Model B is a 200.
