Vehicle Description This 1998 Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Edition is a strong running, nicely preserved special edition C5 that is ready for some serious cruising.
When the Corvette debuted at the Motorama in New York City in January of 1953, it was a boulevard cruiser with much to be desired in the performance department.
As the 50s progressed, a V8 was added as was a manual transmission which started to cement the Corvette atop the American performance-car mountain top and allowed Chevy's Corvette to start truly rivaling the European sports cars that it was meant to compete against.
By the 1960s, the Corvette's muscle car reputation was widely known and Chevrolet sold thousands of them.
However, it wasn't until 1978 that the Corvette was chosen as the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 and to commemorate that accomplishment, the GM marque offered a limited edition Pace Car Replica that wore the iconic Indy 500 livery like those that were used in the race.
8 years later the 1986 Corvette was chose again to pace the Indy 500 racers and, interestingly, the actual '86 Corvette Pace Car was the first street legal Indy 500 Pace Car since 1978, another Corvette.
In 1995, the Corvette was chosen yet again to pace the cars at Indy's famous Brickyard after a 9 year hiatus.
Then just 3 years later, in 1998, a second-year C5 was selected to be the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 with the actual Pace Car driven by Indy 500 royalty, racecar driver Parnelli Jones.
Chevrolet built an additional 1,163 Indy 500 Pace Car Edition cars in 1998 and they were available for purchase at Chevy dealerships.
